GG1188S: shape and build

Seen front on, this is a squared-off take on the aviator, with a flatter brow and straighter sides. There is a full rim all the way round each lens. It rests on a double-bar bridge, and the nose rest is part of the frame. The frame material is acetate, per the supplier. Acetate is the plant-based plastic that most designer frames are cut and polished from sheet; it holds deep colour and an optician can re-adjust it with heat. It has acetate temples with a metal plaque at the hinge. Gucci files this colourway as code 001.

The numbers on the temple

The size is 58-17-140: lens width, bridge width and temple length in millimetres. A 58 mm lens puts it in the large range for sunglasses, so check it against a pair you already own. If the fit needs a tweak once it arrives, any optician can adjust it; pairs ship exactly as the maker packed them.

Through the lens

Grey polarized lenses are fitted. Grey is the neutral tint: it dims light evenly without shifting colours. The supplier lists these lenses as polarized, which cuts the glare that bounces off water, road and glass.
