A closer look at the FT1196

In the photos the Tom Ford FT1196 is a butterfly front, wide at the top and tapering down. There is a full rim all the way round each lens. The frame sits on a plain single bridge, and the nose rest is part of the frame. Our supplier lists the frame as acetate. Acetate is the plant-based plastic that most designer frames are cut and polished from sheet; it holds deep colour and an optician can re-adjust it with heat. The frame is finished with acetate temples. The branding sits on the lens. Its signature is the crisscross crossover bridge with side cutouts. Colour 53E is how Tom Ford labels this version.

Reading the size

The temples are 140 mm long. The supplier's lens and bridge figures for this pair do not add up, so only the temple length is shown. Frames ship as the maker boxed them, without adjustment, and a local optician can fine-tune the fit.

Through the lens

Brown lenses are fitted. A brown tint warms the view slightly and sharpens contrast. An even, flat tint. We make no polarization or UV claim for these lenses: the supplier's data does not include one.
