SL545: shape and build

Seen front on, this is the teardrop pilot lens that drops below the brow line. It has a full rim all the way round each lens. The frame sits on a double-bar bridge, and the nose rest is part of the frame. The feed gives the material as acetate. Acetate is the plant-based plastic that most designer frames are cut and polished from sheet; it holds deep colour and an optician can re-adjust it with heat. Acetate temples with a metal plaque at the hinge complete the frame. Colour 001 is how Saint Laurent labels this version.

Size and fit

The size is 58-16-145: lens width, bridge width and temple length in millimetres. A 58 mm lens puts it in the large range for sunglasses, so check it against a pair you already own. It ships unadjusted, straight from the box; a quick visit to an optician sorts any fit issue.

What the lens does

The lenses are light yellow. A coloured tint like this is chosen for its look as much as for shade. Nothing in the supplier's data says these lenses are polarized or gives a UV rating, so we say neither.

The SL545 is also listed here as 004 (Brown with green lenses) and 002 (Transparent Beige with light yellow lenses). Shape and size are the same; only the finish changes.
