The SL881 at a glance

What you get is a squared-off take on the aviator, with a flatter brow and straighter sides. There is a full rim all the way round each lens. It rests on a double-bar bridge, and the nose rest is part of the frame. The feed gives the material as acetate. Acetate is the plant-based plastic that most designer frames are cut and polished from sheet; it holds deep colour and an optician can re-adjust it with heat. The frame is finished with acetate temples with a metal plaque at the hinge. The colour code is 006, Saint Laurent's own name for this finish.

Size and fit

It measures 55-18-145, which is the lens width, then the bridge, then the temple length, all in millimetres. A 55 mm lens puts it in the large range for sunglasses, so check it against a pair you already own. Nobody bends the temples or nose rest before shipping; an optician can do that in a few minutes if the fit is off.

Through the lens

Brown lenses are fitted. A brown tint warms the view slightly and sharpens contrast. Polarization and UV rating are not in the supplier's data for this pair, so neither is claimed here.
