Three colors on one black frame
The SL 539 Paloma is a big, squared-off acetate frame whose detail is in the trim. The front is glossy black, but a narrow red band runs along the whole top edge of the brow, and each outer corner, where the front turns toward the temple, is faced with a polished gold metal plate. From the front you see black with a red line above the lenses and a flash of gold at each side; from the side the gold plate reads as a solid block before the thick black temple begins. SAINT LAURENT is printed in white on the outside of the temple, with no monogram at the hinge.
An oversized square, not a wayfarer
The lenses are wide and nearly straight-sided, with a flat top edge under the brow and a gently dropped outer corner, so the shape is a rectangle that leans square rather than the trapezoid of a classic wayfarer. The rims are thick all the way round and the brow is deep, which is where the frame gets its presence. It is sold as a women's frame and sits large on most faces.
