A compact rectangle with studs at each corner

The CL40297U is one of Celine's smaller acetate frames: a rectangle with a straight brow, squared lower corners and rims thick enough to give it weight without the width of the house's oversized squares. What sets it apart is where the three dots sit. On most Celine acetate they appear on the temple only; here a trio of small silver-toned studs is set into each outer corner of the front as well, just inside the hinge, so the mark shows from the front. A second set sits on the outside of each temple beside the word CELINE in gold. The temples are wide and flat at the hinge and taper toward the ear.

Grey polarized lenses

Our supplier lists the lenses as Grey Polarized. Grey is the neutral tint, cutting brightness without shifting colors, and polarization filters the flat glare that bounces off water, wet roads and car hoods, which is why this lens is the usual pick for driving and the beach. The tint is solid rather than gradient. The supplier's data gives no UV rating for this pair, so we state only what it lists.

Lens width, bridge width and temple length in millimeters: 53 mm lenses, an 18 mm bridge and 150 mm temples. The lens and bridge make a medium front that suits most faces without reading as big. The 150 mm temples are long for a frame this size; they give extra reach behind the ear and help the frame sit level on a larger head, and they can be adjusted by an optician if they run past the ear.

Shiny black, sold as unisex

Color 01D is a plain glossy black with no tortoise and no color pop; the studs are the only contrast. Celine lists the model as unisex and the proportions bear that out: a medium rectangle in black acetate works on either face.

The gradient sibling, 01B

The same frame comes as 01B: black acetate with grey gradient lenses that are not polarized. Shape, size and studs are identical; the choice is between the solid polarized grey on this page and a lighter, fading grey without the glare filter.
